Distributed carbon capture
Modular carbon capture systems that remove up to 100% of CO2 emissions from buildings and industrial sites.
CarbonQuest builds compact, modular carbon capture systems designed for small- and medium-scale emitters — the 800,000+ distributed emission sources across North America that legacy carbon capture technology ignores. Their Distributed Carbon Capture technology pairs with building boilers, fuel cells, and combined heat and power systems to capture CO2 on-site, then liquify and transport it to local businesses that need carbon for their production processes. Founded in 2019 by Dave Curry, who brings over 30 years of energy and telecom software experience, the company's first commercial installation has been capturing boiler emissions in a 30-story NYC apartment building near Lincoln Center since early 2022. Led by President and CEO Shane Johnson, CarbonQuest has expanded to multiple installations across New York City and partnered with Iceland's Carbfix to permanently mineralize captured CO2 in basaltic rock formations.
CarbonQuest caught our attention by flipping the carbon capture playbook — instead of building massive systems for power plants, they went small and modular, targeting the hundreds of thousands of buildings and boilers that collectively emit enormous amounts of CO2 but have been completely ignored by the industry. The NYC apartment building installation proved the model works at building scale.
Discovery signal: Novel approach to distributed carbon capture at building scale, strong NYC traction with commercial installations, experienced energy-sector founding team
CarbonQuest targets the overlooked distributed emitter market — buildings, boilers, and small industrial sites — with compact, modular systems that capture CO2 on-site and sell it to local businesses, creating a circular carbon economy rather than requiring expensive pipeline infrastructure.
