Remote work supercharged
Analytics platform that helps engineering managers optimize remote team productivity, collaboration, and satisfaction.
CodeGem is a people management platform designed to enhance the performance of engineering teams through real-time analytics, pulse check-ins, peer feedback, and goal setting. Founded in 2019 by Stephanie Mills — a University of Waterloo Management Engineering student who had worked as a software engineer at Apple, Uber, Dapper Labs, and Deloitte — the platform integrates with tools like GitHub, Slack, and Jira to extract and aggregate data, producing unbiased analytics and actionable recommendations about engineering team health. Mills entered her idea into Concept 5k, a student pitch competition at UWaterloo, and CodeGem was subsequently accepted into the Velocity Incubator Program. In late 2020, Mills was selected as a Thiel Fellow, dropping out with four months of school remaining to pursue CodeGem full-time. The company raised $580K backed by Garage Capital, Capital T, the Thiel Fellowship, and notable serial entrepreneurs.
CodeGem caught our attention as a Thiel Fellow-backed play in the engineering management space — Stephanie Mills combined her hands-on engineering experience at Apple, Uber, and Dapper Labs with management engineering studies to build the analytics layer remote engineering teams were missing. The platform's integration-first approach to surfacing team productivity and satisfaction data positioned it well in the post-COVID remote work boom.
Discovery signal: Thiel Fellowship selection (2020), founder pedigree with engineering roles at Apple/Uber/Dapper Labs, Velocity Incubator graduate, early traction in remote work tooling during COVID.
CodeGem combines engineering analytics with people management tools like pulse check-ins and peer feedback in a single platform, giving engineering managers both quantitative and qualitative insights into team health.
