About

Maya Labs is an applied research laboratory building self-programming machines — autonomous systems that can write, deploy, and modify custom software to perform tasks. Founded in 2020 by Sibesh Kar and Shubham Mishra, who met while launching Hyperloop India (the first Indian team in SpaceX's Hyperloop Competition), the company started as a no-code automation platform integrating tools like Notion and WhatsApp. It has since evolved into a program synthesis research lab with PAC-1, their first-generation engine that converts natural language into machine-executable programs using a custom flow-based programming language. PAC-1 supports conditionals, looping, branching logic, web navigation, custom functions, and native memory. Backed by Y Combinator (S22), India Quotient, Titan Capital, and FirstCheque, Maya believes that enabling machines to write programs that generate other programs is the foundational step toward artificial general intelligence.

DailyDropout Take

Maya Labs caught our attention as a scrappy Indian AI lab with an ambitious thesis: that teaching machines to write programs is the foundational step toward AGI. The Hyperloop India origin story of its founders and YC backing validated their technical chops, while their pivot from no-code tools to program synthesis showed a team willing to chase the harder, more impactful problem.

Discovery signal: YC S22 batch, unique program synthesis approach with PAC-1, founders' Hyperloop India pedigree, pivot from automation to AGI-adjacent research

What Makes Them Unique

Maya's PAC-1 program synthesis engine uses a custom flow-based programming language to convert natural language into executable programs, combining conditional logic, neural search, and fine-tuned language models — pursuing AGI through the lens of machines that write their own code.
