Virtual parties, real connections
A virtual world with spatialized video chat for real-time social gatherings.
Varty brings real-world events into virtual parties through spatialized video chat. Communities sign up to create a Varty space online — whether it be a church lobby, bar, or concert hall. Users walk around the venue and chat with those in close proximity, replicating the natural dynamics of in-person socializing. Founded by UC Berkeley students Adam Young, Kevin Fang, and Eli Stewart, Varty aimed to solve the problem of remote social interaction feeling flat and impersonal by adding spatial awareness to video communication.
Varty caught our eye as an early experiment in spatial social platforms — UC Berkeley students building a virtual world where proximity determines who you talk to. While the metaverse hype was still building, Varty was already exploring what natural online socializing could feel like.
Discovery signal: UC Berkeley student founders, early spatial video chat concept before metaverse hype cycle
Varty offered lightweight, browser-based spatialized video chat that replicated real-world social dynamics without requiring VR hardware or downloads.
